Running on the Treadmill

Running on the treadmill, whether at the gym or at home, is a great way to get your cardio workout in. The only issue with running on the treadmill is that it can feel a little dull and affect your motivation.

Not to worry!

There are things you can do to keep yourself motivated while running on the treadmill. Enjoying your workout is essential. If you have trouble having fun on the treadmill, the following 4 tips will help.

1. Set running goals for yourself

Before you get on the treadmill and start running, you should have a goal to keep yourself driven. Ideally, you should have a mix of short-term and long-term goals.

We recommend you set a long-term goal and break it into manageable chunks. For example, let’s say your long-term goal is to run 2 miles without stopping.

How can you work towards that?

You could focus on your endurance. In the first week, you can run half a mile and then walk half a mile. Repeat twice. Of course, you should have rest days.

In the second week, you can start increasing the distance and so on. Each week should get you closer to that long-term goal. Once you achieve that, set a new one!

2. Choose your entertainment

Running might not always be the most pleasant, so keeping your mind focused on something fun can help with your workout. Of course, you still need to pay attention to your form and keep your head in the game to avoid injuries.

Nevertheless, you can rely on several forms of entertainment to stay motivated while running indoors.

Here are some of the best options:

  • Music. You can create your own playlist or find one online that matches your taste in music and overall vibes. Music will keep you pumped and present.
  • Audiobooks. If you’re a bookworm, playing an audiobook while you’re running on the treadmill will do the trick. You can find them on Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, and more.
  • Podcasts. Whatever topic you may be interested in, rest assured there’s a podcast about it. You can find them on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and more.
  • Stream something. Whether you like to watch movies, TV shows, or online content creators like gamers, streaming something while you’re running on the treadmill will keep you entertained and make the time go faster.

3. Visualize an outdoor route

If the hardest part about running on the treadmill for you is that you miss being outside, visualizing could help a lot. Visualization is all about creating a mental image in your head and making it as detailed as possible.

This way, you take your mind elsewhere, making the task at hand a lot more palatable and fun. Picture the weather, the scenery, other people running alongside you, etc. Add as much detail as you can to your visualization and make it enjoyable.

4. Use a running app

Not everyone can create mental images in their head and not everyone enjoys that. If that’s the case, you can rely on technology! There are many running apps out there that will help you feel like you’re outside when you’re running on the treadmill.
